How Botox Can Stop Embarrassing Sweat

Although Botox originally got its start as a cosmetic treatment, the medical community is routinely finding new developments for its ability to treat other neuromuscular conditions such as migraines, muscle spasms and hyperhidrosis, (the medical term for ‘excessive sweating’). Botox has been FDA-approved since 2004 for the treatment of excessive sweating of the underarms in “patients unable to obtain relief using antiperspirants,” according to the International Hyperhidrosis Society.

Celebrities like Chrissy Teigan recently revealed on Instagram that she had Botox in her armpits to stop the excessive sweating, saying it was “the best move I’ve ever made” and how she “can now wear silk again!”

How does Botox work to stop sweating?

Botox stops sweating by blocking the communication between the neurons and the sweat glands. Some may worry that preventing your body from sweating will be harmful to it’s natural thermoregulation, but this shouldn’t be a concern, because the underarms only contain a small percentage of the body’s sweat glands.

Botox injections are a medical procedure which requires a licensed practitioner in order to administer. At Revive Med Spa we have four practitioners in each location who specialize in underarm injections and all are able to provide a thorough consultation prior to the appointment. The actual injection procedure is quick and takes no more than an hour.

What to expect at your appointment:

Your provider will inject several Botox injections just below the surface of the skin, using a fine needle, in order to temporarily paralyze the sweat glands. You may be given something to prevent pain, like ice or a topical numbing agent, but most patients describe the pain level as mild, similar to pin pricks and slight stinging while being administered. Depending on the severity of the hyperhydrosis, multiple injections may be needed. A minimum of 100 units total will be administered, approximately 50 units per underarm.  Full results take effect in 3-14 days, and depending on the individual, will last up to 6-9 months.

There is no downtime to Botox injections and you can resume your normal activities after the treatment. It is recommended to abstain from using over-the-counter deodorants or antiperspirants for 24 hours and no strenuous exercise up to 4 hours post procedure. After a Botox injection, the different proteins will diffuse to the treated area. Increasing blood flow during a heart-pumping workout can metabolize the product before diffusion is complete. This causes a less than effective treatment.

The effects of Botox to stop underarm sweat are temporary, which means you’ll need more injections in the future, but Botox is a highly effective treatment for excessive sweating. For many people, it will drastically improve their quality of life. Questions or curious to know more?
